Why are we so proud of being Porteños?
You all now that I`m in love with this city.:I live and work here, I have my family and friends, I`m a happy person most of the time; so loving this place is a normal thing since I`m ok with my life. I can`t complaint; therefore almost all the things I say about this place are nice.
But recently I`ve been paying attention to the comments about Buenos Aires made by other porteños and some of them made me feel sick.
I mean, not everything here is ok . It doesn`t take a lot of intelligence to notice all the bad things in this city. And the stupidity of some of its inhabitants. But a lot of people are trying to cover the dark side of Buenos Aires and they are making propaganda about how nice we are and how perfect the city is (saying for example that Ba is like any European big city). Not to mention when they try to disguise a bad porteño habit into a charming thing of our personality... For example, the porteño guys consider themselves charming and creative because they shout obscenities to the girls in the streets (Rhyming two nasty words can be consider creative? I don`t think so..)

So here are some facts you (porteños) should know in order to become a better person:
-Mate is not for everyone, in fact not all of us like it. I`m not a fan and I know a lot of people just like me. So if someone doesn`t like it, don`t be rude, or don`t feel offended (sharing a straw can be repulsive to a number of people you know)
-Football (socer) is not important for everybody. Not all of us know how the last game between Boca and River finished, and a lot of us don`t give a s.... So try to talk about other things if you are sharing a conversation with other human beings
-Your Mother doesn`t deserve a Novel price for being the best mother of the world, and probably you are the only one that likes her (ask your father)
-Being a vegetarian is not against health!!! people can survive without meet and please respect that. And one more thing, chicken, fish, and pork, are meat too!!!!!!
-Ah!!! And Dulce the leche is too sweet for a lot of people!
Ok, I`m very mad here, I`ll stop with this or my blood pressure will make my heart explode...
See you

Hi Diva,
Wow, what brought that on? I feel like you left out at least 50% of what you were trying to get across.
I am a foreigner so I do try to watch what I say and leave the criticisms to things that are really dificult to defend. However, I always feel like Argentina is so close to getting it right. You just have to keep moving in the right direction. You have a great quality of life here that is dificult to replicate in other countries.
Enough-this is your blog not mine. How about sharing what brought on the rant.
Besos,
Frank
Yeah, well I`m going to correct what it a little bit. I was kind of angry when I wrote that..
Yes many foriegners here see with their dollars and just rave about the lifestyle here . To me its all about money for most.
I beleive Buenos Aires is being sold to the world as this paris of south america which is plain wrong.
To come as a immigrant from United States and think you will be accepted by the inhabitants here you will find out over time its near impossible .
At the beginning I thought they were such a nice people then I found out that all they were interested in was to take advantage of me . Portenios seem to have no shame in charging more for foreigners and service here in most restaurants and shops is appalling.
If you try to think that you will find work here easily that is also a huge problem as the society here does not give americans a chance . You need plenty of your own capital to start a business and all the nightmares of dealing with the buerocracy.
All in all I have not found the inhabitants of Buenos Aires to be friendly . Brazilians Columbians are friendly and a open people and I will be moving to Bogota soon as the people there are just incredible.
Hi anonymus, I`m sorry to hear you feel that way about Buenos Aires.
The part of Buenos Aires being sold as paris is not entirely our fault. Blame the journalist who said that about us in other countries.
I do not agree when you say you are not accepted cause you are an American or that the working issues are just because you are north american, you know that unemployment here is a big issue.
Porteños are nice in their own way. A lot of times the people that try to be very nice are the phonies, so I never judge by the first impression here. Like any other part of the world, there are a lot of A..h....(or you`ll tell me that in North America is not like that? so why did you move in the first place?)
Don`t be mesmerized by Colombia or Brazil. Probably you were like that when you first came to Buenos Aires. You`ll find a lot of things that are exactly the same way. Bureaucracy, for example.
You know, reading about Argentinian history will help you to understand a little bit more about us. Please don`t take it personal, we can be stupid with any one, not just with north Americans. And don`t generalize
ok, good luck in your new destination"!!!
Call me crazy, and I'm not a linguistics expert, but the grammar of anonimo does not strike me as Norte Americano. I'm not trying to take a cheap shot, but in reading this individual's other posts, I'm struck by the similarity in the sentence structure to someone who speaks English as a second language. As such, the opionons may be somewhat tainted by latin american bias, or at least, not reflective of an open-minded perspective. That being said, I appreciate the open, frank opinions of the Diva, and welcome her perspective.
Hi Chris. I know that the grammar is terrible, but apparently anonimus (who is a lady from ohio or iowa- I don`t remember accurately) is a real north american (you can read other comments that she wrote in posts like el chanta ). But believe I`ve read worst english than that from native speakers...
See you!
