Milanesa a la napolitana con papas fritas

The milanesa (breaded veal) a la napolitana is one of the few typical dishes from Buenos Aires. Everyone adore it, or at least eat it every once in a while.
The story goes like this: There was this restaurant in microcentro and there was a guy who used to go there every single day ( the kind of person that I wouldn´t even look at). One day, he arrived later than usual and all they had left in the kitchen was a burnt Milanesa. The owner of the place, afraid that if they didn´t feed the guy they´d loose a client, took the burnt milanesa and added tomato sauce, ham and cheese on top of it. He served the milanesa with french fries and Voila: He invented the Milanesa a la napolitana (with fritas/fries).
I´m telling all this because I want to recommend a place in Abasto (actually you can find this restaurant in other parts of the city, but I´m not sure they have this promotion). It´s called Kentucky, in Corrientes corner with Billinghurst. They serve a gigantic milanesa with fries and a 1.5 litter bottle of soda all for 30 pesos. When I say gigantic I mean enormous. I shared this menu with 2 friends and we were completely satisfied. Can you believe it? 3 people eating for 30 pesos!!! I don´t remember paying 10 pesos since 2002.
Anyway, go, live the porteño experience, and go back to your country telling the story about the gigantic milanesa that was for 3 people to share but you ended up eating by yourself.

By the way, if you don´t like milanesas, they have very good porteño style pizzas.

This is the beauty I was talking about. This picture was taken by Sandro. Thank you a lot!!!

but there are a lot of "gourmet" porteños that have forgotten about our roots and they cannot enjoy the local meals anymore. Poor people.

hey,

i know you probably made up that story to be cute, but isn't the name pretty self explanatory. it also amuses me that argentinians think that milanesa is unique argentinian treat when it exists in one form or another in pretty much every western cuisine. In fact I just ate some damn good milanesas in mexico.

Hola Diva,

You're funny and I like your attitude. A few things: 1. Being a vegetarian, there's no way in hell I'm going to touch your milanesas. Baby cows? God, how sick are you? But I do understand the appeal and I'm sure they're delicious. But what bums me out is that these milanesas de soja taste like shit. No, I mean they literally taste like shit. And that's just wrong. Can you suggest any alternative types of milanesas that are less cruel to our animal friends here in BsAs? 2. I enjoyed reading your entry on how to pick up porteñas. It was funny for sure and you've got a nice satyrical bite in your writing. But I think you need another installment because "not looking at other women's asses and tits" just isn't enough game for white guys that are pretty much clueless. And though I'm taken and need no advice in this department, frankly, I think there are lot of yanguis in Argentina who don't have a clue. So help them, and make the rest of us laugh please! Chau y saludos, --j2b

Jackson, I love hamburguesas de mijo, you can find them in several restaurants, also, if you go to a dietetica, you can buy home-made milanesas de soja that taste better than the ones in the supermarket, they even have some milanesas rellenas with different things, like cheese and onions or spinach.
As for the article about picking up porteñas, I think that the guys who look for that kind of article for real should buy one of those self-help books like "How to look attractive when you are a loser" or similar ones.

Kentucky on Santa Fé and Godoy Cruz is the only Kentucky worth mentioning :)

Um, when I lived in BsAs, my local sandwicheria occasionally had a milanesa napolitana on the menu, and it just had heavily garlicked tomato and cheese on top. I loved it.

I love ham, though I've never understood the porteno way of putting ham on/in everything (lasagna?!). It's (sorry) not even great ham (I love me some great ham).

I know what you mean, sometimes ham is like a pink slice of an unknown something that tastes like crap. But in this case, it´s not. 100% ham
